Born in Milan, Italy, Cristina Metelli studied at art school as a teenager, before immigrating to Adelaide, Australia, where she continued her artistic education, earning a Bachelor Degree in Visual Art (Honours) from Adelaide Central School of Art.
Her art practice, originally based on painting and sculpture, has in recent years shifted solely to abstract paintings inspired by the natural landscape, investigating the extent to which human lives are entwined with the natural environment. Her investigations draw upon her interest in the fields of both natural science and psychology, and the ways in which people can be positively affected by their interaction with nature. Her abstract paintings bridge the space between nature and human perceptions. Each painting depicts a moment in time, a unique experience of the natural landscape through a sensorial and emotional response. With a bold use of colours and paint application techniques, Cristina seeks to evoke in the viewer their own memories and emotions.
Cristina has exhibited widely and she was recently winner of AGES Art Prize 2021/22, QLD. Her paintings were also selected for Tatiara Art Prize 2021, ‘Art at T1’ exhibition at the Adelaide International Airport 2020, and the Emma Hack Art Prize.
Cristina’s artwork has been extensively exhibited and collected in Adelaide, interstate and overseas.
